A brief summary of what you do
My role as an estimator involves taking ironmongery information for a building project and shaping it into a clear, workable schedule. I ensure the specification is fit for purpose, uses the right products at a competitive price, and is returned to the client in a timely and unambiguous way.
I started my career driving a delivery van for King & Company in the North East and finished my time there as Branch Manager with George Boyd, following several acquisitions over my 25 years with the business.
I have worked across most roles the industry offers, but specification has always been my passion. The drawings, catalogues, samples and craft all appealed, and it quickly became clear it suited me best.
2026 marks my 30th year in the industry. A lot has changed. My office is now my eldest’s old bedroom, catalogues are online, and computers have full colour screens rather than green and white ones. Messy desks now mean too many tabs open. The craft remains though, and I am still learning almost every day.
Favourite project or client you’ve worked with and why
I’ve had the pleasure of working with many different clients, contractors & designers, on many different projects, but what keeps me interested is the variety. From sole traders starting out, installing new doors in their first HMO, to multinationals building a new university, no two jobs are ever the same and there is always a new puzzle to figure out.
Your favourite product/finish?
This changes regularly as trends come and go, but I’m a traditionalist and I’ve always enjoyed a well-turned knob. A rosewood beehive on an antique brass rose would be my first choice.
