Hardware Led Luxury on the Rails

John Planck Ltd was entrusted to deliver exquisite architectural ironmongery and specialist hardware solutions for the Britannic Explorer, supporting a train interior where craftsmanship, materiality and tactile detail define luxury.

Project Overview

The Britannic Explorer represents the pinnacle of luxury rail travel in the UK. The interiors combine refined British style with exceptional detailing inspired by the countryside. With just eighteen cabins, including three Grand Suites and fifteen Suites, the train offers an intimate, design-led travel experience that captures the romance of rail with a distinctly modern sensibility.

In such a setting, every fitting, handle and hinge contributes to the overall sense of luxury. Hardware needed to feel bespoke and tactile while delivering the highest level of technical performance required for a moving environment

Our Involvement

John Planck Ltd was commissioned to specify and supply architectural ironmongery tailored specifically for the unique demands of luxury rail travel. Working in close collaboration with the interior designers, JK Interiors, and the project’s engineering team, we developed solutions that balanced mechanical reliability, safety and aesthetics.

A key feature was the bespoke lever design, produced by From The Anvil on a concealed fix rose to achieve both tactile precision and secure installation suitable for vibration and movement. Cabin doors incorporated concealed cam action closers and low-friction hinges to meet fire and acoustic requirements while remaining light and effortless to operate.

Each detail was considered not only for performance but also for harmony with the natural materials and finishes used throughout the carriages. Finishes in unlacquered brass and stainless steel were selected to reflect the design palette and deliver a timeless, understated elegance across all suites and public areas
