John Monaghan Ltd was started in 1974 by John Monaghan, a successful Architectural Ironmonger who had already proved his business acumen in his prior role as MD at G Cartwright Ltd. There he had doubled the size of the architectural ironmongery side of the business, resulting in the need to move into larger premises. However, John also saw that there were good opportunities to be had in importing quality brass hardware from India and the Far East and decided to set up on his own – thus, John Monaghan Ltd was created.
In the early years, the company grew rapidly, thanks in large to John’s foresight, and in the 17 years prior to his untimely passing, he was supportive of other promising industry professionals in the creation of new companies, in particular John Monaghan (Midlands) and John Planck Ltd. Sadly, John was struck with terminal cancer and taken too soon, but his family continued his legacy and still work in the company today with his daughter, Frances as Operations Director.
